Acupuncture
is part of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been practiced for many
centuries – in fact, it one of the oldest continuous systems of
medicine in history – the earliest recorded history dates as far
back as 2000 years B.C.
Qi (pronounced chee) is
thought to be an endless flow of vital life energy throughout the body.
Qi originates from major organs and flows along 12 regular and 2 extra
continuous circulatory channels called meridians. There are points on
the skin (called acu points) that are on the meridians, and are energetically
connected to specific organs, body structures and systems. When the qi
is moving smoothly throughout the meridians, a person is healthy; but
if the qi in the meridians are blocked it will cause pain or sickness
because of the imbalance.
Acupuncture is the technique
of using fine, sterile and disposable needles and inserting them through
the skin at specific points to be able to control pain and other symptoms.
This encourages the body to release hormones and chemicals that are able
to reduce pain, regulate the endocrine system and calm the nervous system.
Most people find acupuncture to be very relaxing.
